Noname- Telefone (2016)
It’s pretty obvious at this point I have a soft spot for atmospheric chill records and Telefone is a quintessential album in that vein. It’s just something I absolutely needed. I love Coloring Book and Flower Boy but none of those projects stay in that breezy, soothing mood all the way through. I’m not saying it as a criticism of those records, I just appreciate a “mood” album like Telefone being out there. It might not be reinventing the wheel when it comes to projects in its style but it’s hands down the most stunning jazz rap album I have heard in a long time. It’s masterfully produced and wind instruments, xylophones and pianos do a marvelous job of creating the relaxing and intimate atmosphere. On top of that we get Nonames gorgeous lyricism and calming vocals. I know painting this album simply as a relaxing listen isn’t exactly accurate considering how dark lyrically some songs get but the aura of the record still makes Telefone a calming and meditative experience.
